We are delighted to announce that the City of New York has joined the Foundation’s Network as a Strategic Partner.
The Foundation’s Strategic Partners already include global businesses and philanthropic organisations — with New York, we welcome the first North American city to join as a Strategic Partner.
As cities look to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and address major challenges such as climate change, the circular economy offers a systems solutions framework that can unlock economic, environmental, and society-wide benefits. The Strategic Partnership will enable us to work together to scale circular economy solutions. We believe the City can provide leadership and expertise, inspiring other cities around the world.
We must shift from wasteful to waste-free systems if we are to deliver a future that serves all New Yorkers and confronts climate change. We’re honored to partner with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to accelerate the work of finding and implementing inclusive solutions.
- Kate Gouin - Acting Director, NYC Mayor’s Office of Sustainability
The Foundation and the City have a long-standing relationship and have worked together on a number of circular economy projects. These include the#WearNext campaign— with brands including ASOS, Gap, and H&M — to reduce waste in the fashion industry and the recently launchedCircular Innovation City Challenge— a global call to action for innovators and entrepreneurs, businesses, and organizations to create more circular cities.
New York is one of three flagship cities in the Foundation’sFood initiative. Last year, together with the Foundation, it hosted an event to engage key actors and mobilise a circular economy for food in the city.
The New York Circular City Initiative, a multi-stakeholder collaboration, outlines a vision for creating circularity in the city, identifying ten levers for change that can generate positive impacts across a range of sectors.
We are thrilled to elevate the City’s relationship with the Foundation and channel our combined efforts towards this critical agenda in a more coordinated and strategic manner. The City is a key stakeholder who shares in the success of all of our work.
